  • Just saw a video. I think he is clearly trying to set himself up for an insanity defense.

Unfortunately, with the planning, the intricate setup in his apartment...he is cleary not legally insane. He knew what he was doing. You don't plan something so well for 2+ months and then claim "I didn't know what I was doing".

    He should fry...tomorrow...with no trial.

I do think his defense will be insanity but that won't be determined based on how he looks. He would have to go through therapist testing before they determine that.

You can generally tell when someone is faking or not, and this dude looked drugged. He was either on no sleep (which is possible since the hammer is about to come down on him) or he is on medication.

Yeah, you're right. I probably misspoke there about the look. He is obviously drugged, but I guess bias made me speak about planning an insanity defense from the bat. I hope it doesn't work.

Normally I'm very hesitant to jump on the death penalty wagon but this dickless wonder has it coming. Ambushing unsuspecting and unarmed victims in a relaxed state, some women and children, using 3 guns and a bullet proof vest ... what a coward.

My understanding is that CO hasn't used the death penalty in quite sometime. Here I think a firing squad is justified. No blanks.

And I know that this will never happen, but I'd love for it to go down in a movie theater as a video plays of everyone he harmed, with videos/images of the victims and messages narrated by the survivors.

  • I believe he'll die by gunshot accuracy. Bear in mind he seems to going to trial in the town where he committed his crime. I also think that is appropriate and I doubt very seriously if his defense will be highly spirited. That remains to be seen, of course, but it seems like a reasonably close knit community.

I see what you're saying. However, are they mentally ill when the buy the things this guy did? I would say if he was able and allowed to purchase 6000 rounds of ammo, ballistic armor and friggin tear gas, then he shouldnt be allowed to plead insanity.

Not saying whether he is or isn't, but I hear a lot of calls for this guy to just go ahead and be strung up right now, when none of us (or the media) knows this guys mental condition.

And just because he planned it and bought all that stuff doesn't mean he is not mentally ill. The mentally ill function every single day in this country and you probably know a few, even if you don't KNOW that they are. Sometimes, we only see mental illness as a guy who eats his own shit, while stuffing ice cream down his pants. But the truth is, mental illness can be a totally warped sense of importance, purpose and many other aspects that many of us have, but not at a heightened scale. Like Charles Manson for instance. He could function in public, but he truly believed that he was to be the catalyst for race riots, that he was being talked to through Beatle songs and Biblical passages. He wasn't just saying that.....he believed it. To him THAT was reality. Just like a person who sits and talks to an empty chair. Their reality is not ours. It must be considered.

My point is to be the devil's advocate if nothing else. Rushing to judge someone because of their terrible deeds isn't the right thing to do and I hate the media is playing in to it. Looking back, wouldn't we say that it was insane to invade Iraq, based on 9/11/01? (well most of us would say that) As a country we were shocked and angry, so we let our emotions cloud how we saw things and we were easily manipulated by theories and "facts" that turned out not to be so.

Maybe, before we strap this guy in, we find out just how delusional he was or wasn't? If he is truly in an alternate reality, then how responsible can he be? And if he is that mentally ill, should he be put away forever, or is it OK to kill him?

Again.....just playing devil's advocate, because I don't see anyone else doing that. Freddy

  • I would say that the only reason I am not for the death penalty is not because I think it's inhumane...if someone does what he did, and is proven competent to stand trial, then he deserves it....

However, I think the death penalty is the easy way out for some people. Let's face it guys, he killed kids. Never been to prison, but even some of the most hardened criminals don't tolerate baby killers. He will get prison justice. Every single day he is there. Maybe that is better justice than the death penalty for someone like him. I am all for innocent until proven guilty, and there are numerous people each day accused of crimes they didn't commit. But I think we can all agree that he committed the act. If (and when IMO) he is proven competent, then he deserves the harshest days he can get for the rest of his life.

Then, with all due respect Auburn, you don't understand mental illness. I think I explained fairly well that the appearance of normality isn't an indication of the reality that is subjective to the mind of the person who is mentally ill.

His planning it out in such detail strikes me as mental illness, though, just like everyone else, I don't know for a fact. If he did it as an act of terrorism, I'd be more inclined to believe he was not nuts. At least not on the level of delusion. There is no way for us to know right now and all of our words are simply speculation, so that's why I hate to see all this shit about how he needs to fry or hang.

Again, a person doesn't have to think he's Napoleon to be mentally ill. Most mentally ill people function quite well in society. If you go out in public, you see some of them every day.

Yep, they are all around us every day. And those are only those that have been diagnosed that we could qualify as mentally ill. There are plenty of people walking around that are plenty messed up in the head/emotions. Heck, let's face it, we're all mentally ill, the degrees just vary. Maybe this guy thought he was the Joker and carried out some elaborate plan. He was smart. He was devious. He was evil. But that doesn't mean he still didn't think he was the Joker, and that would make him mentally ill by most standards.

I personally believe that anyone who kills another person in cold blood has some type of mental problem. We don't come out the womb with a thirst for murder. So there is something in a killers brain that tells them its ok. A gang member kills a rival... how often are they consider mentally ill? Well shouldn't they be? It's murder. May not be on the same scale as this fcuk up did but it's murder. So he may be mentally ill but with the planning this guy went through he's not mentally incompetent. And if they try him as mentally incompetent ... then you pave the way for other fools who kill to plead the same thing.

I kind of agree, in that it takes a large degree of being mentally "broken" in some way in order to carry out a murder. Some people might snap in a moment of emotion, others may plan something out methodically. To me, it all comes down to degrees. In my opinion there's a difference between the guy that is part of a violent gang and that has chosen to carry out a violent act to maybe join the gang or whatever, and the guy that breaks from reality and thinks that he's a super villian (if indeed that was the case here, not saying it is). Some people that are bipolar can do wild things when in a manic phase (particularly if not on meds) that they would not ordinarily do in a more balanced state. We work with a young man with schizophrenia in our business, and he has access to a wonderful support group that checks up on him. He also doesn't appear to be a paranoid schizophrenic. On the other hand, I know of a family that had to break apart because the husband just one day, out of nowhere, was watching a movie and thought it was real and happening right there. He was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, and has ended up living on the streets at times because his family simply can't take him in. He's too altered from reality and won't take his meds. Who knows, he could think that someone is after him someday and do something horrible. I'm not condoning that or saying it is okay, I just think it is different and has to be dealt with differently than the person that is gang banging over drug territory or kills a family to rob them.

In the end, it's all messed up, and sadly not everyone has the same capabilities or the same access to help. It is a huge problem though. In the end, we all like to think that we have control over ourselves and that society can control what happens. Unfortunately, try as we may to see how x or y could have been prevented, we will never be able to control everything. There will be people that live in altered states of reality, and people that choose to live in horrible states of reality in violent drug culture, and we can only do so much to prevent it. Maybe this guy was just a mean, hateful person that thought it was fun to kill. Maybe he has a serious disorder and went off his meds. Maybe he just lately started breaking from reality. I guess we'll find out more as time goes by, but none of that brings back those deceased or brings peace to their families, unfortunately. I understand why they, and most people, want to string this guy up. He'll be dealt with severely, I'm sure, even if the death penalty isn't invoked, as he deserves for what he did, for whatever reason he did it.

  • We have to remember that living so close together causes insane problems - literally. But then, some of the grossest imaginable crimes have been committed during Winters in Wisconsin and Canada, probably partially due to cabin fever and weather.

But there is no doubt disposing of predators and people who will always be evil is a classic conundrum. Make no mistake, studies have shown some sociopaths' heart rates and pulses literally decrease when they watch violence because they are so at home with the concept of torture and pain. It completes them.

People are now wired differently and they can even be from good families. Dahmer's parents were not monstrous but their kid sure as hell was. As a very liberal person by nature. with a brother who works assiduously against the death penalty, even he has some dudes he'd pull the rope on, all by himself.

We do need to understand the makeup of sociopaths better and we're getting it done. It is not aimless science. Profilers now have an enormous stash of data and can make extremely educated guesses about murderers and the unique signatures of serial killers. This is pretty vital research of you ask me, not just for sentencing issues but to apprehend and protect us all from suspects.
