Syracuse starting field position after kickoffs was the 24 yard line (actually 24.167). The problem today was not kickoff coverage.

  • yeah this was pretty much the only positive from today's game . The made a Kick off coverage adjustment that for the most part worked well. The gave up one 37 yard return but the rest were covered really well

  • In watching the games across college fball this season it seems the new strategy is to have your kicker land the ball right on the
goal line. This forces the receiving team to return the kick and then you tackle the guy before he reaches the 25. Thus you have done
better than kicking the ball through the end zone. We are good at putting the kick on the goal line but we just can't tackle the guy
    before the 25!!

  • Id settle for a nasty defense. It cures allot of ills...

  • It'd be nice to have a shut down defense, actually.

  • I'd settle for an average defense at this point.

  • I'd settle for the insanity defense or self defense.

You are missing a couple of key things. Yes, you are right, that can and has been a trend with the new TB rules, and starting at 25 yd line now. But, by forcing them to run it back you also take the chance of someone returning it for a large return or for a TD. A TB or inside the goal line kick ensures that you don't give them that chance.

If you are playing a team with an explosive return man, you don't want to give them the chance. If you try to squib kick it or kick it to the corner, you risk a penalty which would move it up even further.

I still think the best strategy is to kick 2-5 yds in end zone and then, many times, if they have a good return man, they will still try to take it out, but, the likelihood diminishes that they get to the 20 or 25 yd line when they start from inside the goal lines. The KO coverage team has more time to get down and he has further to go.

However, if he is starting at the 5 or 7 yd line, it is likely that he will break one or at least have more likelihood of a better starting field position, relatively speaking, at the 30 or 35 yd line, which is what we have seen from our team.
