That's the point, if the city wants to buy out UofL from their YUM! contract that will free up the university to build its own arena where they will get to keep all of the revenue that they generate and it will be competition for the YUM! for concerts and other big events. Then in 5 to 10 years when the NBA team owner moves the team some where else the city of Louisville will be SLO with no chance of paying the bills.

I'm not familiar with the law suit, but the brownfield legislation says that the state will foot the clean up bill (or most of it). Although I do remember something about there being more contamination than expected at CSX so anything is possible.

I'm really interested to see just how you raze a structure like the silos so close to the interstate. Would it be some sort of implosion? You can't just take a wrecking ball to a 15-story reinforced concrete silo. They would have to close I-65 during the implosion if they went that route.

Beyond a pipe dream. We have politicians acting like it is a done deal, if not for UofL's contract. A recent list of NBA candidate cities like 25 long didn'tr even include Louisville.
Cincinnati couldn't support pro BB and Louisville sure as hell can't.
The only ones stirring the fecal material are Ukant trolls and politicians and consultants who want to continue to funnel our tax doillars down the drain "arranging an NBA deal" with "overseas investors that can't be named, while they line their pockets to the tune of $100K per study for interent surfing! Just as I believe a lot of "contracts" generated a flood of cash for politicians in selecting the site, building and [mis]managing the YUM!

Then perhaps like me you should tell your local politician to stop spending our tax dollars perusing an NBA team and honor the contract they signed with UofL. If the city breaks the contract with UofL they will have to pay damages and it will be you and me again who will be picking up the tab for that bill too. Add to that if the city brings in a NBA team there will be costs associated with the re-branding of the arena that tax payers will pick-up. If the city wants to pay its bills on the arena they should do everything in their power to promote more development within the TIF instead of creating obstructions.

I think you guys should stop calling those who support the NBA "trolls" and "idiots". There are some smart people that believe it could work. Just because you don't share their opinion doesn't mean they aren't intelligent, well meaning people. There are PLENTY of people that support the NBA plan AND are UofL fans. Myself being one.

You should also stop assuming the terms of an undrafted contract. We don't know if re-branding will be included in a relocation/expansion package or not. There's a decent chance of the tax payers footing that bill but it's no guarantee. Just like the NBA itself, all things are hypothetical at the moment. No need to get all up in arms just yet.

When you have the cities of Virgina Beach and Seattle to name a few who are proposing to build 400 million dollar arenas in an attempt to lure an NBA team I highly doubt those teams will be willing to come to Louisville and play second fiddle. If the city can convince a NBA team to come in and conform to the contract that the city already has with UofL fine more power to them. I just so happen to believe it is naive to think it is going to ever happen but don't believe me I am far from an expert on the NBA go read the article Eric Crawford wrote a few months back.

Maybe, maybe not. The firms that conduct these demo's are seriously talented. They rountinely take down taller buildings in the middle of CBD's with minimal disruption. The biggest challenge is the dust cloud generated by the explosives. May only require stoppage of traffic long enogh for the dust cloud to settle (driving visibility to return).
When they took down the Humana building (only 6-7 stories?) for the Yum! they blew it in early AM on a weekend. It is as close to interstate as silos. Don't know if they shutdown I-64 along riverfront??
If they work it right, can probably get a film production firm to pay a fee to film it for an action flick. It will be a very dramatic toppling.

What I was thinking was that the silos are close enough to I-65 that they could actually fall onto the interstate if they went the wrong way. That Humana building wasn't nearly as close to I-64. It could have fallen over onto the entrance/exit of the 2nd Street Bridge though. But I am positive that bridge was closed.
The dust cloud would definitely cause a visibility problem like you say, especially with so much concrete. I figure they might close it for an hour or so at dawn on a Saturday or Sunday. Just open it back up as soon as the cloud clears.

This isn't exactly breaking news. U of L has known Solae was closing for a long time now and have already acquired the property. The silos are definitely coming down. The campus master plan has a park on the silo sites for the immediate future, and if the NBA thing ever becomes a reality then that is where an on campus arena would be built.

Breaking News: Solae Plant closing after 93 years. ( SILO SITE)
