I know they're considered an eyesore, but for some reason, I kinda like the silos. I wouldn't mind if they left them standing and built around them. Kind of like the train tracks going through campus... just adds character.

But, I wouldn't be against tearing them down either.

This will create a lot of room for much needed dorms, retail,etc in that part of campus. Really going to look good once that is built up along with the KY trailer site.

I imagine that plant will stand there awhile. Its an industrial site. The soil is probably contaminated, as most industrial sites are. There would have to be negotiations on who pays for the clean up and such.

You've got to be joking right??? I guess you miss the trains and rock salt where the riverfront park now sits too and you miss the Lg&E brick power plant/antenna where the KFC Yum! Ctr sits? LOL.

Well, neither of which have anything to do with our campus. Yes, the silos are an eyesore, as I said I'm not against tearing them down. We're an urban university, and we've always embraced that. But I'm all for beautifying our campus.

So, Mr. Jurich.... tear down those silos!

I'm not familiar with the law suit, but the brownfield legislation says that the state will foot the clean up bill (or most of it). Although I do remember something about there being more contamination than expected at CSX so anything is possible.

I have a random question, what are the chances that if a new arena needs to be built, that it is as nice as the Yum center? I know TJ wouldn't go the cheap route, but the Yum center is the best in college right now. A lot has to change for that to happen, but it's not entirely out of the question.

This isn't exactly breaking news. U of L has known Solae was closing for a long time now and have already acquired the property. The silos are definitely coming down. The campus master plan has a park on the silo sites for the immediate future, and if the NBA thing ever becomes a reality then that is where an on campus arena would be built.

I'm really interested to see just how you raze a structure like the silos so close to the interstate. Would it be some sort of implosion? You can't just take a wrecking ball to a 15-story reinforced concrete silo. They would have to close I-65 during the implosion if they went that route.

I would like the Silos to stay there if they are updated to look nice and modern

The idea of the NBA coming to Louisville is a pipe dream. Anybody that really thinks this community is going to be able to support a third arena needs to have their head examined. UofL will most likely put new athletic dorms on that corner.

That's the point, if the city wants to buy out UofL from their YUM! contract that will free up the university to build its own arena where they will get to keep all of the revenue that they generate and it will be competition for the YUM! for concerts and other big events. Then in 5 to 10 years when the NBA team owner moves the team some where else the city of Louisville will be SLO with no chance of paying the bills.
