  • You are right, I have pretty much avoided this board and stuck with the Confidential board. I have posts in three other threads on the front page and one of them is the props to Teddy thread. So maybe there has been a lot of intelligent thoughts. That is what I hoped for when I started this thread. Not one yet and now you're pissed off because I called you on it. The more things change the more they stay the same.

  • I believe you're the one that started throwing the horse $hit. You and some other muck rakers have gotten all bent out of shape at those of us that have chosen to keep our heads.

The man came to the press conference wanting to talk about nothing but the Sugar Bowl. He didn't bring those other things up. He was asked about them. I have no problem with anything he said, but then again I wasn't raised to be a whiner.

Why did Charlie decide to call out the fans at a press conference that should have been about two things

    1) The ACC
    2) The Sugar Bowl

If that's muckraking to you that is some powerful kool aid you got there.

What in Earth did you 'call me on'?? Ha ha, farmer.

I mentioned there have been some highly intelligent posts regarding the entire pros and cons of the fallout from the presser - you admit you haven't paid much attention-

and then you vindicate some weird sense of righteousness, basically denying what you just said? You want to get personal too - which is some seriously bad karma for you. My style may be confrontive but nothing I do resembles what you allude. That's some seriously lame shit.

  • LOL you don't even know my position on this but that's nothing new.

I have consistently said that if you can't link it then don't use it.

I have also said there are only two things that we do know.

    1) The press conference
    2) Lou Holtz's response to Charlie.

    Farmerdude

  • whatever, man.

You find those to be most compelling - that's what you mean.

    Here's what I know:

Charlie denied interviewing. Charlie said he is Louisville's coach. Charlie says he's tired of people asking.

Holtz makes sense to me, for the record. Are you saying you "interpret" his statement to mean Charlie is interviewing for other jobs or that maybe he was handing out free advice to someone he likes, no matter what happens next? Please tell us how Holtz knows if Charlie is interviewing elsewhere, in the third place.

Holtz' statement says what to you?

I've already addressed this but, Charlie wasn't the one to veer from the Sugar Bowl, the reporters were. He even said that's what the press conference was about and he didn't want to discuss the other BS. And yeah, you might not be carrying the rope, but you're at least standing in the back of the mob egging them on.

  • What's the explanation for Charlie refusing to admit whether he's talked to another school or that UL is where he will be in the future? That, coupled with the info that UT has 3 candidates, makes me believe that maybe Charlie did interview and he just doesn't know if he'll be chosen or not, which is why he won't answer the previous questions. He just doesn't know.
Who knows if that's right or not and God knows I don't know anything, but why else would he perpetuate the drama and angst that comes with it.
I've said all along that "Charlie isn't going anywhere" and I still believe that because, to date, he hasn't given me one reason to doubt what he says. When he refuses to say, that's what jars my confidence a little, I've got to admit.
One thing I do know, Charlie is a man of character until he gives me a reason to know that he's not. Every aspect of his program is better now than when he got here. Each year has shown improvement. And that's what we all want. Some of us may be more impatient than others to see it all come together and some of us have expectations that aren't realistic. But when push comes to shove , we're all Card fans and that's better than being a fan of any other program.

  • one good thing out of all of this is at least we have not had to hear about the new coach hired down the road. With all of teh coverage about charlie it has overshadowed the cats hiring. At least their is a nice side effect.confused

In Butch Jones presser last week the reporters asked him about some job opening and he said (paraphrasing): "I am the coach here and I intend to stay, if there is another question about this the press conference is over".

And I won't hide it, I do want him to get another job. Not that I didn't want him to stay but I don't want a coach that doesn't want to be here. And I feel that is his attitude.

    Interesting little article:

  • The Coomes article had some good points, particularly about how he chose to address the fans. I don't think he hit the mark with ego thing and basically calling him backstabber. Jurich isn't a dummy and knows that the coaches he hires here that are on the way up will likely look around for a shot at a job they consider to be near the pinnacle of the profession. Strong has been a second or third banana for a long time and at his age, the opportunities to grab a job like UT will be few and far between.

I think he has a nice path to become a legend here at UL. He will only have terrific pressure to live up to the past in some other places, but then again, a lot of coaches live for the chance to take over a program that is historically significant.

It's the nature of these boards for us to speculate about what is going on, but for now, he is the Louisville coach and one of our own. While I'm disappointed in pieces of his PC yesterday, I still want to see him on the sidelines for UL. If something happens and he leaves, there will be plenty of time for us to discuss that situation and all that led to it. He may not leave, so there is no reason to go ape shit over something that hasn't happened.

  • Whatever opportunities Strong has this season, I suspect he'll have even bigger opportunities after next season if he stays at UofL.

Not necessarily. If he wants to coach a big time school in the SEC, those jobs don't just come open every single year. I'm not saying one way or the other what he wants, but UT is a pinnacle type of job for football coaches. Notice that we don't go poach UT, Florida, Auburn , etc head coaches for our program. We are still a step on the way up.

I'm not trying to argue, just clarifying my remark. It's just an opinion and I'm looking at it from pretty much an SEC point of view.

  • Bama USC aTm and UGa will not be open next year. Pretty much bottom of the barrel after that. Now is the time or in another 3 or 4 years.

  • ....or it could be because Strong was asked a direst question of what he wants to see from the fans and was angry when he gave his answer. I don't know about you, but I've said a lot of things when I'm mad/upset that I wouldn't have said otherwise (regardless of whether they were true or not).

    Good question.

I actually think it is a good sign. If someone does not care about you, they will not be invested in you, coach you, give you constructive criticism. They will simply walk away and don't care.

CCS looked like a man that was trying to change the culture and thought process of fans and university, when he had the biggest speaking leverage - just got into ACC and to the Sugar Bowl.

So, I think a more appropriate question would be, "what would it say if CCS said nothing and was going through the motions ?"

Coaches leave for a wide variety of reasons (good, bad and indifferent). None of us know how many SEC openings there will be next season.

  • In CCS's own way, I think he was challenging the fans to step up, be more visible and to be even more supportive of his team. While I think his comments were ill advised, I think he saw the same thing I saw during the UConn game with people leaving with the Cards only a touchdown behind. Yes we ultimately lost in 3OT's, but the stadium did empty out in the 4th quarter. I sit in section 107 and it was very noticable to me.
