Ask yourself this question

  • Why did Charlie decide to call out the fans at a press conference that should have been about two things

    1) The ACC
    2) The Sugar Bowl

    Farmerdude

  • I am answering this based on the tone of 247 lately. I am sure this will be a thought in a lot of posters minds.

"Because he wants some recruits to follow him to another school with better fan support."

I have a feeling some posters are thinking it.

  • Hopefully someone will give the question some thought and come up with an honest answer.

  • What is your opinion?

I can't think of anything but negative scenarios.

  • I heard the same words you did, and I did not hear Charlie "call the fans out".
    That's a matter of perception.
He made a factual statement about the fans and their lack of expected support after being 9-0, or 9-1 , whatever it was . You've got to admit that there are programs that wouldn't let that happen, especially if your striving to be a big time program.
Just like our team, the fans have some development to do themselves as a group.

I think Charlie has some degree of unrealistic expectations of the UL fans , as they exist today, just as some of our fans have unrealistic expectations of Charlie and our program.

  • Why would you take the time at a press conference before the biggest bowl in school history, just after a miraculous escape to a great conference that is a perfect fit for UL and while you are trying to convince kids to come play for you at the school with the fans you are wishing would be more like their hated rivals?

Other than that you are spot on.

He was asked about the fans and probably carried on longer than he should have. He knows what it's like to have big time football fans and I'm sure the way we do things has been a disappointment in some ways.

I'm not happy about what he said, but I don't disagree with about 98% of it. I believe he could have deflected it easily to keep the focus on the game and encourage people to buy tickets. All the stuff with what he would like to see and his expectations could have been addressed after the Sugar Bowl. Now, it's all this.

Our peak is not even close yet. This thing is building and it won't be recognizable in 10 or 15 years if someone like Strong stays the course and lets time and winning do its thing. Tradition building isn't instant, it's incremental.

  • Right or wrong isn't the question, just the appropriateness.

Several people on here are giving him a pass because "he hates public speaking". Well maybe he should go back to being an assistant then.

    Farmerdude

  • I would have understood him a little better if ticket sales for the Sugar Bowl were lagging. But, he couldn't have picked a worse time to ding the fans. Logic says... steer clear of the comments he made. But, he steered right into them.

Charlie didn't bring the subject up, the questioner did. He was asked a question and he answered it. He didn't go out of his way to attack the fans. He answered a question honestly.

He didn't have to make the comparison in the first place, did he? He could have used any number of real big time programs to make his point. He didn't. He pointed down the road to our most hated rival. Telling us he wished we're more like them. If that's not an attack, it's certainly a dumb thing to do.

  • The man's exasperated at this point in the season. He's shooting from the hip. This is something that has always been on his mind. It isn't the first time he's beaten this drum, is it? Nope. Don't act so shocked. From the press conference following his first game he was talking about how fans needed to be in their seats by kickoff, etc. Nothing new here.

  • I have a question...

Say you are a head coach, you're in the middle of contract negotiations for more pay, better benefits, better security, more tools to help build your program...Do you, while in the middle of those negotiations and maybe seeing what other people are offering, tell the media your desired intentions if doing so while in the middle of that, hurts your leverage in developing a new contract? If they know you're going to stay, maybe they don't offer as much (all parties).

    mpsher01

  • Yes I have, after the fact. It wasn't near as bad as initially portrayed.

Here's my problem. When asked if he was going to be the coach of the Cards next year he tap danced more than the Stepp Bros (I'm guessing you, me and maybe one other will know that name). Simple answer would be "no comment". However when asked about the UL fanbase he really didn't hesitate, he said he wished we were more like Big Blue Nation.

I say to that the same that I would say to anyone that wished that on me or my friends. GFY.

    Farmerdude

  • The man came to the press conference wanting to talk about nothing but the Sugar Bowl. He didn't bring those other things up. He was asked about them. I have no problem with anything he said, but then again I wasn't raised to be a whiner.

  • You would make a good fan of the BBN just like Charlie wants. They are constantly dissed by their AD and coaches and keep coming back for more.

    Wow, how witty.

I asked one simple question and no one that wants to defend Strong has anything intelligent to say, just throw the bad fan bombs out there.

I'm not cut that way. I don't follow anything or anyone blindly. I think he was wrong, and I think he wants another job. I also fear that he isn't getting one.

This is all a bit late to the party. People who want to defend Strong already have - quite vocally, specifically and in long rants of their own. Saying no one has had anything intelligent to say uses an amazing broad brush ignorant of 24 hours worth of bullcrap, back and forth.

    Charlie has a job.

  • Well maybe you could point out the intelligent things that the posters in this thread said when defending Charlie. You won't because you can't but you will probably come up with a cockamamie excuse because that is your MO.

And, you'd probably look good in a dress. So what?

Seriously, most of us feel he could have handled the press conference better. But, nothing happened that makes me feel like crying. Hell, like I said, I'm not even going to whine, much less complain (other than him dissing the Card March after the program was a no show without telling the fans three times). But, I'm not going to act all butt hurt and bleeding.

    Wow, lol.

Evidently you haven't been paying as much attention as you'd like us to believe.

What a bullshit response. Pissed me off.
