Yeah, what I found odd about all this is just how open UnderAmour, Maryland, and the dad seem to be about the whole situation. Most programs that do business this way try and hide this type of affiliation when it comes to recruiting. These guys are screaming it out loud to the media, almost like they're bragging. You can tell that this is UnderAmour's and Maryland's first rodeo.

UnderArmour (based in Baltimore and the CEO is a huge Maryland alum) vs. the most crooked man in college hoops (Coach Cow)/Nike. Will be interesting to see how this one plays out...

That article almost makes it seem like Coach Cheater gets players on sheer recruiting prowess and less on his Nike/William Wesley connections. Damn I would love to see those kids go to Maryland and beat sUcK at their own game. I never want to see us cheat, but it doesn't hurt my feelings to see Kentucky lose out on kids for the same reasons that they get kids.

After Phil Knight parading around sUcK's locker room and Anthony Davis openly embracing William Wesley on the court, there isn't one thing sUcK fans can say with any sort of moral high ground about UnderArmor . Hell, if the NCAA isn't going to do anything about it with Nike, then they can't say anything about the other shoe companies pulling the same crap.

    madvillecard

  • Most of me is glad we don't operate like that at Louisville but part of me wishes Adidas would buy us some recruits. NCAA doesn't give a crap anyway.

Oh, I agree 100%, but my point is Phil Knight, Nike or even Adidas have never done anything like this in public during an elite recruiting battle. You always hear the rumors about what's happening behind the scenes, but they are never in the forefront of things.

I'm just saying that NIKE/UK, Adidas/UCLA, Jordan/UNC and whomever else recruits this way, using their shoe affiliation is a lot more low key compared to the way that UnderAmour and Maryland are handling this.

Basically, all people have on those other schools that I mentioned above are behind the scenes rumors from mysterious unnamed sources, but with UnderAmour and Maryland you have the dad actually going on record saying that the only person that has the twins phone# and is allowed to contact them is an UnderAmour official.

They do definitely seem to be awfully open about it, lol. I thought only UK got away with that.

The same UK fans that say that will try to throw dirt on UNC and Duke for their transgressions. Go to the website of any 3 of those programs and watch them call each other cheaters. I think it is hilarious. It reminds me of "There's Something About Mary" when all those guys were calling each other a stalker, lmao.

  • Ive said the twins were a lock to UK for nearly two years. Looks like maybe thats not the case.

  • JrNichols5 said...

Money is always money, but if you were a one and done, why in Gods name wouldn't you go to UK? Cal has proven he gets top talent into the league and doesn't check up on the "student athletes" to make sure they are attending classes after the first semester. Why wouldn't the Twins go to UK over Maryland?

My speculation is they are trying to avoid the shit storm around UK recruiting, like LvilleKidd has been saying. Does he have creditable information? I guess we will find out on Thursday.

Because Anthony Davis, M. Gilchrist, John Wall, Cousins, and Brandon Knight were all one and done regardless if they went to Kentucky or not. Going to UK mainly benefited guys like Orton, Bledsoe and Teague, who were able to piggy back off of the others. They probably would not have been one and done otherwise.

But as far as the Harrisons.... they are one and done and it doesn't matter which school they go to. The same for guys like J. Parker, Randle, and Wiggins. Going to UK will not make them any more or less one and done.

I hope the hammer is falling on UK. But, as other posters have pointed out, there is a lot more going on behind the scenes with Maryland and UK, and it's not just potential UK violations.

  • You had to think that other programs and shoe companies would see what's going on and step up and take their slice of the pie as well. I don't believe for one second that Cal/UK/WWW are the only ones shrewd enough and crooked enough to buy elite recruits regularly.

  • I don't care how much like sour grapes this sounds, but John Calipari's way of doing things (actively recruit as many 1 year players as possible without regard to getting them an education), along with ESPN, and shoe companies are fcking up college sports. UK basketball is NOT college basketball. It's just not.

Start paying these kids and get it over with. The kids that play in revenue generating sports are being exploited. It's just that simple. Now, I'll give you that the "one and doners" are allowing themselves to be exploited, but most players are not of that ilk. Education is a great thing to get, but these players are generating billions of dollars in TV revenue, ticket sales, and apparel.

Just my .02.....regardless of what happens with the Harrisons and UK.

if the NCAA allows school to start paying players then it still won't change anything. All that does is give a new starting point for top athletes.

They will still have their hand out to the highest bidders.

I suppose you are right, but at least it will be right there on the table. We all know what's happening, why not just put it there in the open for everyone to see?

  • So this recruiting battle is essentially the University of Nike vs the University of UnderArmour?

What the hell has college athletics devolved into?

I don't like it at all either, but it is better than Nike controlling everything. Many of these school are undoubtedly getting fed up with the BS. That is why you saw Shabazz go to UCLA. Adidas had stepped in for them. I really didn't want to believe shoe companies had that much control even though I had said I thought they did for a long time. I think it is much more apparent , now, that they have even more power than we may have realized.

Paying them will not help anything. Then the bidding will be done in public. Not sure why anyone would think paying players some type of money would help any of this.
