Looking at it objectively, CRP was right about Russ in the first half -- he played horrible. The shot you were referring to was one where he took a shot with only a few seconds into the shot clock with no ball movement. He did that another time as well in the first half. He just got called out on it, that's all.
I am also wondering if you are confused. I seem to remember Bob commenting on Blackshear's three pointer as the "best offensive possession of the half" since he "went over the top of the zone." at any rate as another poster commented, it's all coach-speak because in one moment one player and one play is the worse or best thing ever and in another someone else and something else is.
his style get's constrained when he has to watch his language and has to worry about being PC with ESPN
He calls it a "shot fake."
Obviously Knight never watched Jerry Smith, because that's all Jerry did for 4 years was shot fake. lol
I like Knight for one reason , he dislikes UK as much as I do. Back before UK would play us he was playing golf with Denny , he was asked by a reporter " when was IU going to play Louisville " he said " a hell of a lot sooner than Kentucky " that made him OK in my book.
Hummm! Gator ,Taste like chicken , but takes a licking .
Dude says "What up Dog , GO CARDS !"
If anybody has a son just starting BB, Knight is a great guy to listen to. He will tell it like it is, good or bad. He believes in the fundementals of the game. I would guess if you shot faked against UK, most of them would go for it.
Head fake? Did someone say head fake?

He may have been the smartest coach in a game without a three point shot, but every game he spends pushing the shot fake like he did last night is evidence that he doesn't get the way basketball has to be played now. We have only one regular player who shoots over 40% on 2pt jumpers (Wayne is currently at 52%). The best 2pt% team in the nation is only at 47%, and #20 is only 41%. Unless he's advocating a head fake and side step, then he's recommending players take a far less efficient shot, which is never a good idea. Basically, taking a 2pt jump shot is a really bad idea for pretty much every player in the game, but Bob Knight still seems to want to use it extensively.
He said "shot fake" not head fake. There is a difference! A shot fake shows the ball up above the shooter's head but a head fake does not. And Coach Knight is absolutely right.
When he criticized the 3 point shot by Russ it was not necessarily the shot itself, it was that it was taken very early in the shot clock without any significant ball movemnet trying to find a better, more open shot. Later when Russ actually hit the three, Knight called it a good posession because the they worked the offense making the defense move and found a good open shot. Again he was absolutely right.
Now he was dead wrong when he said that we lost a couple of big guys off of last year's team (unless he was refering to Gorgi's injury) I don't think you can realisticlly count Kyle Kuric or Chris Smith as "big guys". Maybe he meant big guys in terms of their contribution and not necessarily their size. He could also have been referring to losing Rakeem Buckles. Who knows but I feel like he was simply poorly prepared.
I think a lot of people would be better off just turning the volume off.
I thought about it at one point. Every comment was some sort of "if I had been coaching" or "back in my day". They should just pair him with Dick Vitale and be done with the awfulness.
Very true, but Wayne is WAY more athletic than Jerry was. If the shot fake freezes a guy for even just a second, Wayne has already blown past them and gotten open. Jerry did use the shot fake, but couldn't get himself open the way the Wayne can.
Bob Knight has inspired me! I'm going into my boss's office tomorrow and tell him I don't give a shit what the company dress code is, I'm wearing my sweater! What a joke...
My favorite, with a minute to go he said "Jim, I'm not sure that we would be able over the course of a lot of looking to find a team that has as much good depth as Louisville has".
My wife, who doesn't know a lot about basketball wanted to know why he keeps saying things we already know? Good question!
My favorite Knight-isn was when he said that when he was caoching he would ask his team to "why dont we try to make them earn a basket instead of fouling"and then he said the same thing 5 minutes later like he had never said it before.
The guy I remember shot-faking all the time was Luke Whitehead, and somehow defenders always went for it. I never understood it because Luke was an awful outside shooter. Swop also used it quite a bit, but he was at least a decent outside shot.
